Introduction
For nurses to be practical in the future and ensure that their practice adheres to the basic principles of caring, it is essential to pay increased attention to the content of their courses. Thus, according to Dr. Jean Watson (1979), the 10 Caritas Processes should be considered valuable cannons and truths that guide nursing practice.
Impact of Caritas 6 on Learning Experience
Caritas 6 has influenced my learning experience positively, allowing me to receive helpful information, access and enhance my creativity and critical thinking, and engage in different ways of learning.
Alignment of Content and Assignments with Course Objectives
The content and assignments meet the course objectives in promoting creative thinking, informed decision-making, and a better awareness of nurses’ numerous roles, skills, and responsibilities. For example, one course outcome is learning to identify barriers and facilitators of introducing practice changes. Participation in discussions and reflections on the topic, case studies, observations, and various projects has contributed significantly to reaching this objective. I learned to identify gaps in my knowledge and apply the received information.
Caritas 6 refers to deepening the creative and artistic self. Its essence is in “creatively problem-solving-‘solution-seeking’ through caring process; full use of self and artistry of caring-healing practices via use of all ways of knowing/being/doing/becoming” (Watson, 1979, para. 6). By developing creative thinking, we as nurses can address this Caritas by applying our skills later in practice and finding the best approaches to sincerely caring for patients. Additionally, knowing trends in nursing practice and quality improvement tools can help nurses enhance healthcare in a creative and inspired manner.
Applications of This Week’s Course Concepts
Further, this week’s content has made me think about the stage of preparedness of the nursing profession for a future in which quality improvement will be under close attention. Finding some potential applications of the course week’s course concepts is possible. For instance, to implement quality improvement in nursing practice in the foreseeable future, I will strive to apply the enhancement theories and tools we learned in this course. Moreover, I can now focus on obtaining empirically based information to increase my preparedness. In this case, it will be easier to link it to nursing practice later and ensure that my steps and decisions are creative and informed enough, as promoted by Caritas 6.
Successes and Challenges in Engaging with Course Material
Eventually, discussing the successes or challenges I experienced when accessing this week’s course content will be possible. Firstly, the topic of the potentially reduced value of high-quality nursing programs increases my confusion regarding quality improvement. I believe such programs will be required and efficient, and it is still challenging for me to understand why this question cannot be answered unequivocally.
As for my success, I found studying quality improvement theories, methods, and practices interesting and engaging. I conducted a self-analysis on how these tools can be used in the future and which theories we explored most fit my nursing perspective and Caritas 6. The latter helped me to engage in this self-analysis because this is yet another way of learning.
Conclusion
Overall, this week’s content and concepts appeared to be engaging but somewhat challenging. At the same time, Caritas 6 made me more aware and focused during this course. The reason is that creativity, informed decision-making, and the artistry of caring-healing practices are available only if a nurse has the required knowledge and skills and can engage in all ways of analysis and knowing.
