To address turnover in the nursing sector, I propose a motivational strategy inspired by Equity Theory. This theory posits that individuals are motivated by fairness and that they compare their own job inputs and outcomes with those of others. If nurses perceive inequity, they may become demotivated, leading to decreased job satisfaction and increased turnover.

The strategy involves conducting regular, transparent equity audits among nursing staff to ensure a fair distribution of rewards, recognition, and workload. Nurses need to feel that their hard work and dedication are recognized and rewarded in a manner commensurate with their contributions (Klimchuk et al., 2020). By implementing a system that clearly and fairly links effort to reward, healthcare organizations can foster an environment where nurses feel valued and treated justly.

Part of the strategy will also include offering professional development opportunities that serve as both rewards and motivators and provide a pathway for career advancement. Nurses who feel they are developing professionally are more likely to stay engaged and committed to their employer (Shaikh, 2022). Additionally, addressing staff’s emotional and spiritual well-being is crucial. A supportive work environment that recognizes the holistic needs of nurses can contribute to job satisfaction. Implementing regular staff support sessions and providing access to counseling services can help nurses manage the emotional demands of their profession.

The impact of this strategy on turnover is clear: by ensuring fairness and equity, nurses are more likely to be satisfied with their job and less likely to seek employment elsewhere. As Proverbs 11:1 (NIV) states, “The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.” This scripture emphasizes the importance of fairness and honesty, principles that are at the heart of the Equity Theory. Ensuring equity in the workplace aligns with these values and can lead to a more harmonious, stable workforce.
