The nursing profession, being one of the most challenging occupations in terms of its formation, requires much support to comply with both the patients’ and medical sphere’s expectations. Thus, in order to make nurses feel as a part of a supportive and understanding community, various professional nursing organizations were introduced. According to Roux (2017), professional nursing organizations may be defined as “collective entities of nurse members that have as their purpose enhancement of some element of patient care or the nursing profession” (p. 108). Hence, the underlying idea of a nursing organization is to provide nurses with a safe space where they have the ability to support each other, share and enhance patient care experience, and advocate for their rights and innovative ideas in the field.

When speaking of activism and advocacy matters prevailing within professional nursing organizations, it should be outlined that these entities are generally divided into various spheres. Hence, professional nursing organizations primarily deal with political advocacy, education, dissemination of knowledge and experience, and professional development (Roux, 2017). The organizations such as the American Nursing Association (ANA) or the Nurses on Board Coalition exist to address the issues of nursing and patient care in the context of the modern socio-cultural development patterns.

When taking an active part in advocating for quality patient care and nursing education, nurses have a chance to provide their patients with proper care and attitude in terms of healthcare access. Having considered the notion of professional nursing organizations, it may be concluded that their existence accounts for the professional development of nurses that benefits patients, other medical professionals, and the medical field as a whole. Indeed, the future of quality healthcare development lies in the nurses’ ability and motivation to enhance their sphere of responsibility and autonomy in decision-making.
