Nursing is a profession of making a difference through selfless practices, compassion, and self-motivation. All these competencies align with the leadership skills expected in nursing practice. This rationale depicts a personal perspective of what the nursing profession entails (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). The reason is that some of the competencies promoted in nursing are the practices that have steered my practice as a nurse practitioner, considering that nursing is a commitment to limitless care and making a difference (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). Therefore the core values of nursing ethics including justice and beneficence have enabled me to demonstrate selfless practice, compassion and motivation in supporting change.
I view nursing as a responsibility to ensure fast, efficient and effective healthcare service is delivered to patients. The quality of services should also not be hindered by the nurse’s emotional, physical, and psychological problems. Such actions depict selflessness, an attribute I value as a healthcare practitioner (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). An example of a selfless practice is when I have to report to work for an emergency call on my day off and still come energetic, prepared, and with a happy countenance (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). Reporting on your day off is one of the most selfless actions that portray a commitment to care and support for change in nursing care
Most of the competencies that guide my practice as a nurse manager align with the nursing ethics prescribed by the American nursing association. Generally, the principles encourage nurse leaders to show their compassion through justice, autonomy and beneficence (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). These principles have enabled me to refrain from maltreatment of any patient by minimizing harm and promoting good. The best case scenario is when dealing with an uninsured patient. Sometimes, out-of-pocket payment of hospital bills may not be enough, affecting the quality of care delivery (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). Some hospitals consider going for the cheapest alternatives depending on the financial capability of the patient. However, the rule of compassion enables me to provide the best by refraining from processes that would bring harm and focusing only on reliable methods which are evidence-based.
To the public, nursing is one of the most morally and ethically sound careers. Nurses have a unique opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives daily. Nurses can impact the health and well-being of patients and their families in various settings, from the operating room to the boardroom (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). Nurse Managers are equipped with administrative skills that enable them to show motivation towards effective care and making a difference (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). For instance, team building has been an integral leadership and management competency learned in the course that has benefited my career. Team building fosters collaboration, interpersonal relations, and interprofessional engagement, improving care quality.
Uniting diverse individuals within the same workplace environment is a crucial skill that shows motivation toward providing quality care and making a difference. For instance, language can sometimes hinder the delivery of quality care (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). However, with effective team building, experts can volunteer to act as translators if they can speak that language, courtesy of collaboration (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). This factor indicates that the motivation to foster collaboration can enhance the quality of care by eliminating barriers, including miscommunication.
The caregiving role of nurses, including advocacy, care management, team engagement, and evidence-based practices, relies on standardized leadership competencies. For a nurse to show their selfless practices, compassion, and self-motivation, they have to advocate for the patient’s well-being through seasoned practices that guarantee better outcomes. Advocacy also depends on the nurses’ communication skills to assure patients that caregivers will safeguard their welfare (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). An effective communication skill builds a dependable team that can advocate for the patient’s rights to enhance care. The reason is that without a proper explanation of intentions, the cooperation between the involved parties is inhibited (Haddad & Geiger, 2021). When collaboration is hindered, the nurse’s roles are compromised, affecting their capacity to deliver the best results.
Another integral nursing leadership role is dependability which promotes effective practices. Dependability is a high level of responsiveness in all situations to ensure every person accesses care when needed. I believe dependability is an important attribute in nursing care since it ensures that I am answerable in every situation. For instance, dependability is taking your colleagues’ role when they are missing in action to ensure that healthcare provision is sustained. Another indicator of dependability is successful delegation of duties to ensure that every expert is assigned duties effectively to ensure that everything stays in control.
Ethical values in nursing are integral in demonstrating compassion and providing better care. My highlights in nursing practice have encouraged me to adhere to the ethics of nursing practice to ensure that I navigate daily issues successfully. The origin of nursing is based on compassion, meaning that caregiving is a personal responsibility requiring resilience, optimism, and non-maleficence to ensure that effective practices are maintained. The foundation of effective nursing practice remains selfless practices, compassion, and self-motivation. These competencies guide ethical practice, which ensures that the best services are provided to deserving patients.
