Effective Leadership Within a Coalition

Leadership is a powerful practice in every nursing coalition. Effective leadership emerges when the right individuals are included in the targeted coalition. Such members should have similar values, expectations, and goals. The leader should “promote powerful practices such as teamwork, effective communication, problem-solving, and decision-making” (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2011, p. 39). This fact explains why the elected leader should possess the required competencies. Team leaders should also promote various cultural aspects. Some of these aspects include “trust, unity, and respect” (Moen & Knudsen, 2013, p. 91). Leaders should ensure every member is involved in the activities of the coalition. The team should also have the required adaptive capacity. These aspects will eventually improve the level of collaboration.

Policy Priority

The role of nursing is to deliver the best services to every population. My chosen policy priority focuses on the use of nursing informatics. The “use of modern technologies has the potential to improve the quality of healthcare” (Moen & Knudsen, 2013, p. 89). The use of evidence-based research will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of nursing informatics. Policymakers should examine these aspects in order to make accurate decisions. Such policymakers will identify the most appropriate technologies that can revolutionize the nature of the medical practice. The use of evidence-based research will equip more caregivers with new ideas. The current knowledge will be used “to make appropriate medical decisions” (Moen & Knudsen, 2013, p. 91). Evidence-based research can present new concepts that can make a difference in nursing.

Communication Skills

Healthcare professionals are required to communicate effectively whenever making specific policy decisions. Such practitioners should possess the best communication skills in order to implement every policy-priority issue. The acquisition and use of modern technologies in nursing is something that requires constant consultation. This fact explains why the targeted individuals should possess appropriate communications skills. The first critical communication skill is active listening. This skill will make it easier for many individuals to understand the concepts raised by other policymakers. Experts in different medical technologies should also present their views (Moen & Knudsen, 2013). The second skill is reflection. A good communicator should be able to analyze different arguments. The policymaker will read different materials before making his or her final decision.

Communicating With My Local Policymaker

The above policy-priority issue is relevant towards improving the nature of nursing. Several approaches can be used to inform the relevant officials about the benefits of the targeted policy-priority issue. The first approach is having a public forum. This forum will ensure different stakeholders are informed about the policy. A formal letter can also be written to the local legislator. The letter should also contain evidence-based arguments. These two methods will ensure the targeted policymaker embraces the suggested idea. The important goal is ensuring that the message is delivered to the policymaker. The message should also be self-explanatory. This approach will ensure the legislator supports the policy-priority issue (Moen & Knudsen, 2013). The practice will support the health needs of many communities.
