Living a healthy lifestyle is vital for all individuals, regardless of age. Although most people believe that eating nutritious food is the only way of being healthy, there is more than that. Physical activities are other factors essential for bodily and psychological wellbeing (Ai et al., 2021). However, a considerably large population, the elderly and youths, do not engage in physical activities due to the unavailability of adequate facilities, equipment, or something to motivate them to do so. Therefore, it is crucial to have a facility that attracts and encourages the elderly and youths to participate in various physical activities as much as they want at any given time. This paper outlines the features of a to be built a state-of-the-art recreational facility, programs to be run, pricing of things, hiring process, advertisement, equipment and supply costs, and cleanliness management.
The Recreational Facility’s Description
The recreational facility will serve two primary purposes: providing instructional classes in a safe and supervised environment and accommodating unstructured social interaction among the elderly and youths. The facility will have several essential areas, including the entrance, reception or control desk, lobby, multipurpose gymnasium, activity rooms, computer room, snack bar, game rooms, outdoor activity areas, and support spaces. The outdoor activity areas will comprise swimming pools, basketball pitches, and other spaces.
The support spaces are vital for the smooth and effective running of the recreational facility. The spaces will include an administrative office, kitchen, toilets, janitor facilities, and communications or electrical area. Staff in the administrative office will oversee all operations within the facility and connect with outside stakeholders. The kitchen’s primary purpose is to offer healthy foods to all who will be visiting the facility.
Design Considerations for Facility
The primary goals and considerations for the recreational facility are to create a homelike environment, encourage autonomy and creativity, maintain a safe and healthy environment, and include appropriate staff space. The homelike environment will ensure ample natural light, a sense of welcome, and the use of indirect lighting. The elderly and the youths will have independent areas such as toilets, a snack bar, and games of their choice, computers, friends, and a quiet pace for solitude. There will be adequate security measures to prevent unauthorized and potentially dangerous individuals from accessing the facility. Additionally, there will be visual access to all spaces, good indoor air quality, and well-maintained equipment. Trained and experienced staff will develop and maintain the facility’s programs, communicate with other stakeholders, store records and equipment, and do other appropriate activities.
Estimated Cost for the Facility
Hiring process
The hiring process will start by identifying all the areas that require a worker and then categorizing them. Some of the categories will include instructors for different physical activities, coaches, chefs, janitors, security personnel, and administrative staff. A recruitment plan will then be developed, followed by describing each job. The following activities are advertising the positions, reviewing applicants, inviting the qualified applicants for initial screening, conducting final interviews, and selecting the best fit for the job. The selected applicants will be offered the job and hired if they accept the latter. The process will ensure that the recreation facility has the best and most experienced personnel.
The facility and different programs that will be offered will be advertised on varying media platforms to ensure that all the targeted customers learn about it. Advertisements are vital to reaching potential customers within and outside neighborhoods (Sama, 2019; Dwivedi et al., 2021). Adverts through the mainstream media agencies will be for about six months. They will mainly target the elderly population because they spend most of the evening watching television and reading newspapers during the day. The time will be limited because the cost of running adverts on the mainstream media is high. At the same time, other adverts will be channeled through different social media platforms such as Facebook. This strategy will ensure that youths, who are most users of social media, learn about the programs offered and the benefits of participating in the latter.
Equipment and Supply Costs
The costs of equipment and other supplies needed to ensure the smooth running of the facility will not be fixed because market forces will influence them. Additional expenses related to maintenance will depend on the service providers. However, the estimated cost for all essential equipment is $1 578 000. Other supplies such as kitchen and office equipment will likely cost about $ 458 000. The costs are subject to increase or decrease depending on quality and suppliers.
Programs, Activities, and Pricing of Things
The recreational programs and activities that will be offered in the facility will be categorized into three groups, including Activities such as drawing and painting that boost participants’ imagination and creativity. Those activities challenge the mind and memory of the elderly and the youths. For example, chess, scrabble, and jigsaw puzzles can strengthen participants’ memory. Recreational events encourage physical activity and the strengthening of muscles. These activities require specialized trainers and coaches and may include swimming, dancing, aerobics, weight lifting, and different games. The pricing of different activities and programs will vary significantly depending on the time participants spend in the facility. However, the estimated minimum fixed price will be $5 for two hours and below, which will increase by $1.5 for every additional hour.
Cleanliness Management
The cleanliness of the facility is an important factor that can influence customers’ satisfaction and willingness to use and recommend it to their families and friends. Therefore, considerable resources will the channeled towards managing the cleanliness of all spaces in the facility. The management will source cleaning services from outside agencies to minimize administrative costs. Equally, such agencies are likely to have qualified professionals who can effectively and efficiently guarantee the facility’s cleanliness.
